Abstract

Prevention of falls, a major source of injury and mortality in adults, can be improved through proper balance assessment. However, the high cost and complexity of current tools limit their application, particularly in primary care clinics. Thus, the need arises for more accessible and economical methodologies to optimize health care in this population segment. This article introduces a study that explores the applicability of an improved version of the Wii Balance Board (WBBm). This low-cost and portable device has been supported by various researchers in terms of validity. The sample consisted of 95 adults, aged between 40 and 85 years, who were evaluated with the WBBm in order to correlate measurements of the Center of Pressure (CoP) with clinical and anthropometric parameters. The research revealed that the WBBm provides effective cues for quantitative assessment of balance and is intuitive and expeditious to use. However, it is highlighted that the interpretation of the CoP is influenced by multiple clinical and anthropometric variables. This suggests the need for caution when generalizing the applicability of these techniques to a diverse population. To conclude, although there is still a long way to go in this area of research, WBBm emerges as a tool with high potential. Its adaptability and practicality may facilitate more efficient assessment of balance in primary care clinical settings.
